Joomla Filesystem changes: Joomla 3 → 4, 5 and 6
5 issues in this guide
Filesystem helpers are a short list with a loud blast radius. This guide groups 5 entries: JFile, JFolder, JPath, JStream, jimport('joomla.filesystem.file'). On Joomla 3 these were global classes loaded through jimport. Joomla 4 keeps class aliases; Joomla 5 needs the Behaviour – Backward Compatibility plugin; native Joomla 6 does not load the alias map, so Class "JFile" not found (and Folder/Path/Stream equivalents) becomes a white screen the moment a helper runs. The replacement pattern is mechanical: add use Joomla\CMS\Filesystem\File (or Folder, Path, Stream), call the namespaced class, and delete jimport lines — Composer autoloading already knows the package. Prefer the Filesystem APIs your target Joomla ships rather than inventing wrappers. Hop mix: 1 at Joomla 3 → 4; 4 at Joomla 5 → 6. If a third-party library still jimports joomla.filesystem.file, treat that as a hard dependency update, not a one-line patch. Catalog replacements in this guide include JFile → Joomla\CMS\Filesystem\File; JFolder → Joomla\CMS\Filesystem\Folder; JPath → Joomla\CMS\Filesystem\Path; JStream → Joomla\CMS\Filesystem\Stream. Open each h2 anchor for the full before/after, fix list, and error strings shipped in the reference data.
