Joomla Headless Development

What is headless Joomla?

A headless Joomla CMS keeps Joomla as the place your editors write, organize and publish content, and hands that content to a separate front end over Joomla's built-in Web Services API. Your site or app can then be built in Next.js, React or Vue, served from the edge, and reused across a website, a mobile app and other channels.

We have built Joomla sites and extensions since 2010 and published 125 Joomla extensions, many listed on the Joomla Extensions Directory, so we work on both sides: the Joomla API and plugins, and the JavaScript front end. For proof, see our Next.js + Joomla build. Still on Joomla 3? It has no core API, so start with a Joomla upgrade to 5 or 6.

Joomla Web Services API

How headless Joomla works

Joomla 4 introduced the Web Services API; Joomla 5 and 6 extend it on sites running Joomla 5 & 6 (4.4 supported). A headless build reads content through that API instead of rendering it with a Joomla template. Here is what we work with on every project.

  • Built-in endpoints

Core content is available under /api/index.php/v1/, for example /v1/content/articles and /v1/content/categories, along with users, menus, tags and custom fields. Each area is switched on by its own Web Services plugin, so only what you need is exposed.

  • JSON:API responses

Responses follow the JSON:API specification. A front end can filter with parameters such as filter[category] and page through large lists with page[limit] and page[offset], so it fetches only the content it renders.

  • Token authentication

Requests authenticate with a Joomla API token sent in the X-Joomla-Token header. The token belongs to a Joomla user and inherits that user's permissions, so we create a dedicated API user and keep the token on the server, never in browser code.

  • Custom endpoints

When the core API does not cover your data, for example a custom component, we add routes through a custom web services plugin and API controllers instead of patching core files, so Joomla updates stay safe.

  • Publishing and preview

A small Joomla plugin can tell your Next.js front end when an article is saved, so only the changed pages are revalidated. Editors keep working in Joomla and can check drafts before they go live.

  • SEO on a headless front end

We render pages on the server or at build time, carry Joomla's titles, meta descriptions and aliases into the front end, and generate canonical tags, sitemaps and redirects there, so search engines get complete HTML.

Example: the latest 10 articles from one category

curl -H "X-Joomla-Token: <your-token>" \
  -H "Accept: application/vnd.api+json" \
  "https://example.com/api/index.php/v1/content/articles?filter[category]=8&page[limit]=10"

In a Next.js app this call runs in a server component or route handler, so the token stays private and the response can be cached and revalidated.

Joomla 5 & 6 (4.4 supported)

Headless Joomla architecture

A headless Joomla CMS splits content management from delivery: Joomla remains the back end, the Web Services API is the contract between systems, and your modern front end is what visitors and apps consume.

  • Joomla as the content system of record

Editors keep working in the Joomla administrator: articles, categories, custom fields, menus, media and ACL. Joomla 5 and 6 (with Joomla 4.4 supported where you still run it) hold structured content, workflows and permissions — the same data your site uses today, without duplicating it in a second CMS.

  • Web Services API layer

The public front end reads JSON from /api/index.php/v1/ using Joomla API tokens on the server. Core endpoints cover content, users, menus and tags; we add custom routes through web services plugins when your components need them. Responses follow JSON:API so Next.js, React or Vue apps can filter, paginate and cache predictably.

  • Decoupled presentation

Your JavaScript app owns HTML, routing and component libraries. We render on the server or at the edge so crawlers receive complete pages, map Joomla metadata into the front end, and revalidate only the URLs that change when an editor publishes.

  • Hosting and channels

Joomla typically stays on PHP hosting your team already uses; the front end can live on Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare or Node. The same API can feed a marketing site, a logged-in portal and mobile experiences without copying content into multiple databases.

Our approach

How We Deliver Headless Joomla Projects

From content model to launch: a staged process that keeps your editors in Joomla and your front end fast.

01

Content model & API audit

We map your content types, custom fields, menus and users to the Joomla Web Services API, and note anything that needs a custom endpoint.

02

API setup & custom endpoints

We enable only the Web Services plugins you need, create a dedicated API user and token, and add custom routes through a web services plugin where the core API stops.

03

Front-end build

We build the front end in Next.js, React or Vue, fetching content on the server so tokens stay private and pages render as complete HTML.

04

Caching, revalidation & preview

We cache API responses, revalidate pages when content is saved in Joomla, and set up draft preview for your editors.

05

SEO & security checks

Before launch we check metadata, canonicals, sitemaps and redirects, and review API permissions and exposed endpoints.

06

Launch & ongoing support

We launch, monitor and keep the Joomla back end and the integration up to date as Joomla and your framework release new versions.

Why Infyways

Why Choose Us for Headless Joomla Development?

Most headless projects are built by either a JavaScript team that doesn't know Joomla or a Joomla team that doesn't ship modern front ends. We do both: the Joomla API, plugins and content model, and the front end that consumes them.

Joomla API and extension depth

We have published 125 Joomla extensions, many listed on the Joomla Extensions Directory, so we can extend the Web Services API with custom endpoints and plugins without touching Joomla core.

Modern front-end frameworks

We build front ends in Next.js, React and Vue that read from Joomla, with server rendering, caching and on-publish revalidation.

Security by default

Dedicated API users with only the permissions they need, tokens kept on the server, and only the Web Services plugins you use switched on.

SEO carried across

Titles, meta descriptions, aliases, canonicals, sitemaps and redirects move from Joomla to the new front end, so a headless relaunch doesn't cost you rankings.

Support after launch

We keep the Joomla back end updated and the integration working through Joomla and framework upgrades.

FAQ

Headless Joomla FAQs

Common questions about using Joomla as a headless CMS, the Joomla Web Services API, and what a headless project involves.

01

Answer

What is headless Joomla?

Headless Joomla means using Joomla only as the content back end. Editors still create and manage content in the Joomla administrator, but the public website or app is a separate front end, often built with Next.js, React or Vue, that fetches that content through Joomla's Web Services API.
