VirtueMart Upgrade or Migration: Which One Do You Need?
A VirtueMart upgrade keeps the store on Joomla and moves it from an older VirtueMart and often an older Joomla release, including Joomla 3 stores, onto a supported stack. A VirtueMart migration moves the store off VirtueMart to Shopify, WooCommerce or Magento (Adobe Commerce), or brings another cart into VirtueMart. We do both. The first step is an audit that says which option fits.
When the Joomla core also needs to move, the Joomla upgrade and the VirtueMart upgrade run as one staged project. According to virtuemart.net, VirtueMart 4 is the latest stable release and supports Joomla 3.10.x, Joomla 4 and Joomla 5. We move older stores onto that line with schema, plugin and override work on staging.
Joomla 3 stores with VirtueMart
Joomla 3 no longer receives security updates. We plan the Joomla and VirtueMart upgrades as one staged project so the store is only switched once.
Joomla 6 and VirtueMart 5 planning
According to virtuemart.net, VirtueMart 4.6 is not for Joomla 6, while VirtueMart 5 (beta as vm4.9) already runs on Joomla 6. We plan production moves only when the target release fits your risk tolerance.
PHP and server upgrades
Moving a VirtueMart store to a current PHP version, fixing deprecated code in templates and plugins so hosting upgrades stop breaking the shop.
Abandoned VirtueMart plugins

Answer
Will I lose SEO when I migrate away from VirtueMart?
Not if URL mapping and 301 redirects are part of the project. We map old product and category URLs to the new ones, carry metadata where possible and resubmit the sitemap after cutover.
