How to generate and install a Joomla plugin ZIP
The Joomla Plugin Generator is a free creator that builds namespaced plugin boilerplate for Joomla 5 & 6 (4.4 supported). Use it when you want a correct folder layout and service provider without hand-writing the package from scratch.
- 01Enter Plugin Name, Vendor Name, Author Name, Author Email, Author URL, Copyright, License, Version, and Description in the configuration form.
- 02Choose a Plugin Type from the list (for example content, system, user, fields, or webservices). The type becomes part of the plg_type_element package name.
- 03Review the live code preview: the XML manifest, services/provider.php, the Extension PHP class, and the en-GB language files.
- 04Download the ZIP (named plg_type_element.zip).
- 05In Joomla, open System, then Install, then Extensions, upload the ZIP, then enable the plugin under System, then Plugins.
- 06Implement your event methods in the generated Extension class and add parameters to the XML when administrators need settings.
Installed plugin files live under plugins/type/element/. From there, subscribe to the right events, validate input, and keep the plugin lean so it only runs when its events fire.
