Joomla is probably the most popular content management system, right there with the Drupal. It is easy to handle, is stable and robust and being an open source project it has a very active community of project developers working towards bettering it. So, if you are thinking of maintaining a website, Joomla should be among best of your choices. If you already have a site running on Joomla, you should rather use the updated version of the CMS. Here is how to upgrade from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5.
The latest version of Joomla is 3.1. However, during the course of its development, there was a sharp jump from at 1.5. It was very popular, but the upgrading process was still a bit technical. After Joomla 2.5, there were options for 1 click updates. So, if you are stuck with Joomla 1.5, you need to change to Joomla 2.5 to make sure that you get the latest and the best of Joomla. In this post, we shall learn how to make the migration from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5.
Before you start onto the process of upgrading, it is assumed that you are fairly familiar with Joomla and how to move around in Joomla. The most important thing here is that you know how to tinker with extensions i.e. how to install extensions and use them for specific tasks. Also, you should understand that there are actually two sides of the upgrade involved. The first one is updating the Joomla software itself. The second one would be to update the Joomla template so that they fit it properly. In this tutorial however, we shall discuss only on upgrading the Joomla software. You should be well aware that your site won’t function properly unless you make the current template compatible with Joomla 2.5. The same applies for the extensions that you have installed. They should be compatible with Joomla 2.5 or you should find proper updates for these.
Step 1: Backup the site
This is and should be the first step of major process that you do with your site. Update all the data and make sure that you know how to restore the site in case there is a problem with the upgradation. There are extensions which you can use to fix the backup problem. If you have been using Joomla long enough you would already be aware as to how to make a backup.
Step 2: Fix the security update
The first thing to do will be to get the latest security update. It is a fairly easy task and you can find ample tutorials on it.
Step 3: Download jUpgrade
The extension which you can use for the migration is called jUpgrade. Download the extension, and then install it.
Step 4: System-Mootools Upgrade
There is one more plugin which you should enable before we start the actual upgrading. You can find this plugin in the plugin manager.
Step 5: Use jUpgrade to start and finish the upgrade
Once you are done with the security fixing and the jUpgrade installation, it is time to actually use jUpgrade to upgrade your Joomla. Start the extension and sit. This extension will automatically download the Joomla 2.5 and will make the necessary changes to the Joomla’s original installation. Once the jUpgrade is finished, you can log back in and will actually see a new interface and the whole of Joomla 2.5 in place.
There are a few cleanup processes involved here. You would have to make sure that all the extensions are compatible with this version. If not, download their latest versions. During the upgradation process there are many things which can go wrong. So, browse the official Forum for Joomla for troubleshooting.
