Upgrade Joomla to latest version using cPanel

This tutorial covers how to upgrade Joomla to latest versions using cPanel.

  • The first step to successful Joomla upgrade is to install the right updates for your website.
  • Always prefer downloading updates from the official Joomla.org website only, to avoid being vulnerable to malicious software.
  • Choose the appropriate update package, in any one of the available format. (.zip, .tar.gz and .tar.bz2). Save the file on your computer.
  • Next step is very crucial and must be carried out carefully. Backup the entire Joomla database and directory. If anything goes wrong midway during Joomla upgrade, then the backup file will help to restore the last stable state of the Joomla website.
  • Now, goto file manager and click on cPanel. Copy the Joomla folder and rename it. On refreshing the File Manager a new directory will appear, bearing the already set name.
  • Upload the upgrade file in the original Joomla directory. On successful upgrade a message is displayed on the screen.
  • Go back to the file manager and extract the package by clicking the Extract button.
  • Check that the root directory is the original Joomla directory. After ensuring, click extract files.
  •  After successfully extracting the files, check that the Joomla installation works properly and the Joomla version has been updated.

Infyways Tip: Always backup your files before proceeding. If there is troubleshooting, then request a quote and hire a professional.

SEO Tips for Joomla Websites and Blogs

seo-tips-for-joomla-websitesSearch engine optimization has been around since long, but with changing trends in SEO techniques, it’s hard to master them which would be applicable for all websites. Joomla websites have a complex structure, but with smart optimization it too can outperform most sites. Follow these SEO tips for Joomla websites:

Easy to Follow SEO Tips for Joomla Website

Identical Name
When it comes to search engine optimization, it’s a general tendency to cramp a website with excessive keywords. While registering an URL, choose a name that would be easy to remember. The site name and the domain name must be identical. For example: If domain name is Infyways.com and site name is The Infyways or Infyways Solutions, then clients would be confused whether its Infyways Solutions or Infyways Technology etc.

Avoid Sample Data
Opt out of ‘Install Sample Data’ at the beginning of Joomla install. Otherwise alongwith the webpages, those irrelevant demo pages, news feeds and links will also be cached by the search engines. If you have already installed sample data then, delete those and empty the trash.

Switch on Cache
Another best SEO tips for Joomla website is to switch on cache. Online visitors are not the only ones who like smaller, cleaner and faster Joomla websites, search engines also give preference to those sites that load faster. Turn on the cache in the Global configuration.

Global Links
Instant SEO techniques are almost dead and have fewer roles to play, in recent times. Update the site with quality contents frequently, to make the site more authoritative in your niche. This not only fosters better ranking in search engines, but also improves Page Rank. Higher page rank sites draw more traffic.

Quality, not Quantity
For the Joomla website to rank higher in search engines, it’s not necessary for the site to be loaded with contents. Give more priority to quality content and get rid of all those pages that are just garbage for the Joomla website and search engines. Scan for the contents in Google by the help of site:my_domain_name.com. Un-necessary pages can be removed by requesting Google to remove the URL.

Optimize load speed of Joomla website

Designing multi-functional Joomla websites is always a tempting thought for every user, but is it worthwhile to have a plug-ins loaded website? Why do Joomla developers insist to give more priority to page speed? It’s because with Google pointing out SERPs (Search Engine Result Page) as a deciding factor for page ranking, faster web pages is the need of the hour. For search engine marketing point of view, SPO should also be given its due importance just like SEO. Rather, SPO complements SEO, because even if the page ranks higher in the search engine, slow Joomla websites have greater bounce rates.

Why to Optimise Joomla WebPages?

  • Just like users, search engines like faster loading page. Slower pages have low page ranks.
  • WebPages that take more time to load, have greater bounce rates. If page optimisation is not done immediately, then search engines will lower their ranks.
  • Slower Joomla web pages lead to increased bandwidth usage of the server.

How to Optimise Joomla WebPages?

Joomla Database Optimization
Frequently optimise the Database tables and boost speed. Optimise tables by logging into phpMyAdmin, select all the tables in the database and click on Optimise.

Joomla Image Optimization
Images add an aesthetic look to the website, but try to use minimum images. Too many images or large sized images slower the web pages considerably. Use images that are optimised for the web only. Softwares like Photoshop have a provision to compress images.

Joomla Template index.php Optimisation
Each index.php file of the Joomla template has unnecessary lines about the template description, in the form of comment lines, which need to be removed. Plus, lines of codes that are of no particular use for the concerned webpage can also be eliminated or replaced with optimised codes. Minify the codes.

Joomla Website Optimisation

  • Required and less no. of Joomla extensions (plug-ins, components, modules) are to be installed. Get rid of unwanted extensions. Remember, not all good extensions are good and trust-worthy. So always choose GNU/GPL Joomla licensed extensions.
  • Turn on Gzip compression by Global Configuration>>Server and set Gzip Enabled. This ensures compression of the web pages before being sent to the server. You may also boost Joomla page speed by setting Joomla Cache (Global Configuration>>Settings>>Joomla Cache) enabled Installing query cache component and enabling caching foe Joomla modules also leads to increased speed.

Joomla Debugging
Enable debugging from the Joomla configuration. Check out all DB queries that are being executed and look for recurring (or repeating) queries. If the recurring queries are being executed too many times, then disable the extension. And if the extension is non-replaceable, then contact a Joomla developer.

Follow these simple steps to optimize Joomla website. And if you want to have even more fast loading websites, request a quote to hire a professional.

Joomla Admin URL

The new joomla users may face problem with finding the URL for admin in Joomla. To get into the admin of Joomla for any of the versions you can just type :

If you have hosted your joomla on a domain then
http://path-to-joomla-website/administrator

and if you are installed joomla on your local machine

http://locahost/folder_name/administrator

Common Mistakes

  • Check that you type the correct spelling for administrator
  • Donot type like this /Administrator or /ADMINISTRATOR , Linux servers are case sensitive.

If you still face problems to access , then check that the administrator folder exists in your joomla folder or else you can install the joomla again.

Sometimes when you try to access the administrator folder you may see blank  web page without login information area. This may happen due to issues with the system plugins or files getting corrupted. You may contact us for such kind of issues and contact us for a paid service.

Can’t install extensions to joomla website

Can’t install the joomla extension is a common error that a joomla administrator might face. The error may be “Unable to move file” or “Unable to find the package”. For both the cases  check that :

  • The tmp folder of joomla has permission 777 or 755
  • In the configuration.php file the path for the tmp folder should be correct.

If the above two are made correct, it will solve your issues. If you still face issues with it, then you can ask us for a Paid Service. Pleaserequest a quote with your details or contact us

Transfer Joomla from one server to another server

Each time Joomla clients ask for upgrading their sites to latest versions, to enjoy the improvised features. But why clueless web developers are pestered with requests to shift a Joomla website from one server to another, by their clients. We would like to let you know why and how. Here are some of the reasons why web masters like to switch over to a new server halfway:

  • Poor services of present hosting company
  • Better features offered by another hosting company
  • Website has outgrown current servers & need new ones
  • Uncertainty  over security & concerned about potent threats
  • Shifting a functional Joomla website from one server to another server seems to a worthless approach for some, yet at times it appears to be the only option. If such a need arises, then care must be taken to ensure any loss of content or third party extensions included. Majority of the times, this is the only reason why people opt for migrating their Joomla website from one server to another server, than reinstalling.
  • Follow these steps to achieve success while shifting the Joomla website:
  •  Backup: Download all the files in the website to a folder in the local system using a FTP application. Incase, anything goes wrong during the Joomla migration, then one can rely on this backup to re-establish the original website.
  • Export DB: The same procedure has to be followed for the database as well. Goto PhpMyAdmin and click on export to download the contents of the database in zip format.
  • Modify Configuration.php: Most people ignore this step, while rest modify the files wrongly. Expertise knowledge is required to identify the right parameters and edit them correctly.
  • Upload: Again using the FTP application, upload the files to a new folder in desired server.
  • Import DB: It’s time to upload the old database files in zip format to the new MySQL server.

The migration process is almost over but after following these steps, don’t forget to test the Joomla website in the new server. Congratulations on the successful transfer.

Joomla Browser Compatibility fixes

With an array of web browsers available, it has somewhat improved the experience of the web users, with their own set of features. On the contrary, it has made the life of a web designer pathetic because cross browser compatibility has proved to be a major concern.
Each of the browsers have their own group of loyal users, so while developing a Joomla website, browser compatibility has to be kept in mind. Internet Explorer specifically has poised the maximum CSS issues as compared to others, but because of its strong base in corporate houses, IE CSS issues cannot be overlooked.
Here are few of the frequent issues faced by Joomla clients using various web browsers:

IE CSS Issues

  • Misalignment of popup menu buttons
  • Label Tags have unwanted padding
  •  Horizontal menu bar appears vertical
  • Div boxes displaying overflowing/repeated images
  • Spaces between items in a li/ul menu, on hovering
  • Standard nested Divs don’t work properly
  •  Incomplete implementation of Box model
  • Style inheritance within tables
  • Tiled background issue in IE
  • NavBar stays expanded

Chrome CSS Issues

  • Improper positioning and alignment of flags
  • Borders don’t appear in clickable images
  • Misalignment of header and the text contents
  • Improper rendering of unordered list
  • #maincol-nav gets shifted in Chrome

Firefox Issues

  • Firefox padding or margin issues
  •  Proper positioning of main div only after refreshing
  • Inability to display lists properly
  • Centering a layout
  • Staircase effect
  • Double margin on floated elements

Although, complete cross browser compatibility is a tough ask and can hardly be achieved, yet zero or minimal CSS issues can be guaranteed, across major web browsers. If you are unable to fix an existing issue in your Joomla website, we would like to offer you our expertise support in this matter. Request a quote to fix it.
