Magento already offers users with a number of handy PDF templates to produce memos, slips and invoices. But it also gives flexibility to store managers to create and customize the PDF templates by editing the prepared ones. This tutorial will be dealing with how you can enable, create, edit and configure templates easily.

How to Enable PDF Printouts for Your Magento Store
Log into your Magento store backend after entering the correct credentials
From the Admin Panel, Select System > Configuration
In the Configuration Panel in the left, under Sales, select PDF Printouts
Click to expand the General section
Set Enabled Printed Templates to Yes
Click the Save Config button to save the changes made
Steps to Create Custom Template in Magento
From the Admin Panel, select System > Templates > PDF Printouts
In the top most right corner, click the Add New Template button
Set the template type to one of the following:
Invoice
Credit Memo
Shipment
Click the Continue button
In the Load Sample Template section, carryout the following steps:
Select the prepared Template you wish to customize
Select the Sample Template for your locale
Click the Load Template button
Steps to Edit Template Information in Magento
Carryout the following steps inside the Template Information section:
Template Name: Enter a description name for the template
Page Size: Select the page size
Page Orientation: Select the page orientation (Portrait or Landscape)
Set the height of the header and the footer by any one of the following ways:
Select Auto Header Height and Auto Footer Height to set it automatically
Enter values in the Header Height and Footer height fields and select the units of measurement
Make the necessary changes to the Template Content
Steps to Add the Template to Your Configuration
From the Admin Panel, select System > Configuration
In the Configuration Panel in the left, under Sales, select PDF Printouts
Click to expand the section for the template you just created
Set Printed template to the name you gave to it (i.e. Name in the Template Name field)
Click the Save Config button to save the changes made
